We expect future systems to include 100K nodes connected through a high-speed interconnect fabric. In this work, we investigate the impact of multirail networking on the performance of a suite of HPC mini-applications that provide simplified source code containing data access patterns and computational characteristics of larger production codes. Our investigation is driven by the following questions: Are applications limited by network performance? Can they leverage improvements in network bandwidth? What type of network operations and message sizes do they use? This work provides a better understanding of the network requirements of scientific applications and informs the selection and procurement of future systems.
